First, if the material is arranged in a systematic/scientific fashion it can show how all the various pieces fit together and it can also demonstrate completeness by showing that all threats are addressed. Second, if each protection technique is preceded by a clear description of the threat that it addresses learning is significantly enhanced because the protection technique is motivated. This paper presents an information threat model that 1) arranges the material in a scientific/systematic fashion and 2) facilitates a threat-first presentation of Information Protection techniques

    Induced mannosidosis-excretion of oligosaccharides by locoweed-intoxicated sheep

    AbstractDaily urine samples were collected from a locoweed-fed sheep, and the oligosaccharide content examined by thin-layer and liquid chromatography. An unusual pattern of urine oligosaccharides was observed, which appears to be characteristic of loco intoxication. Changes in the pattern could be correlated with the onset of visible disease, which occurred approximately 5 weeks after the typical urine sugars were first detected. HPLC showed that these sugars consisted of two homologous series of oligosaccharides containing one and two residues of 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-D-glucose, respectively

    Preoperative Imaging for Perforator Flaps in Reconstructive Surgery

    Background: Although preoperative imaging of perforator vasculature in planning microvascular reconstruction is commonplace, there has not been any clear demonstration of the evidence for this practice, or data comparing the many available modalities in an evidence-based approach. This article aims to provide an objective, evidence-based review of the literature on this subject.\ud \ud Methods: The evidence supporting the use of various modalities of imaging was investigated by performing focused searches of the PubMed and Medline databases. The articles were ranked according to the criteria set out in March 2009 Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine definitions. Endpoints comprised objective outcome data supporting the use of imaging, including flap loss, unplanned returns to theater, operative time reduction, and surgeon-reported stress.\ud \ud Results: The objective high level of evidence for any form of preoperative perforator imaging is low with only small number of comparative studies or case series investigating computed tomographic angiography (CTA), magnetic resonance angiography, handheld Doppler, color duplex, and classic angiography. Of all modalities, there is a growing body of level 2b evidence supporting the use of CTA.\ud \ud Conclusion: While further multicenter trials testing hard outcomes are needed to conclusively validate preoperative imaging in reconstructive surgery, sufficient evidence exists to demonstrate that preoperative imaging can statistically improve outcomes, and that CTA is the current gold standard for perforator mapping

    Neurologic outcome after penetrating extracranial arterial trauma

    AbstractPurposeWe undertook this study to determine factors that adversely affect outcome in patients with penetrating injury to the extracranial cerebral vasculature.Patients and methodsMedical records were reviewed for all patients who had undergone surgical intervention to treat penetrating injury to the extracranial cerebral arteries between January 1989 and December 1999. Forensic autopsy findings were also reviewed for all patients who died as a result of their injury.ResultsOne hundred fifty-one patients with injury to the brachiocephalic artery (n = 21), common carotid artery (n = 98), or internal carotid artery (n = 32) were identified. Overall mortality was 21.2%, and stroke rate in surviving patients was 15.1%. Twenty-five of 32 deaths (78.1%) were stroke-related. Brachiocephalic artery injury was associated with the highest mortality (38.1%), and survivor stroke rate was highest in patients with internal carotid injuries (22.7%). Hemodynamic instability at presentation led to both higher mortality (30.7%) and stroke rate (19.2%). Preoperative angiography did not influence mortality or stroke rate in hemodynamically stable patients. Procedural mortality associated with arterial ligation was 45% (9 of 20 patients), and no surviving patient experienced a change in pre-ligation neurologic state. Nine patients remained neurologically intact after ligation, and 2 patients with preoperative localized neurologic deficit were unchanged postoperatively. In 131 patients, mortality after arterial repair was 17.6%, and in 5 surviving patients (5.4%) an ischemic neurologic deficit developed. Twelve of 15 surviving patients (80%) with preoperative neurologic deficit who underwent arterial repair had improved neurologic status. Cerebral infarcts were confirmed at autopsy in 23 patients; 18 infarcts were ischemic (10, repair; 8, ligation), and 5 infarcts were hemorrhagic (all, repair). No factor was identified that was predictive of ischemic versus hemorrhagic infarction in patients undergoing repair.ConclusionsThe presence of hypovolemic shock, internal carotid artery injury, complete vessel transection, and arterial ligation are associated with unfavorable outcome. Penetrating injury to the brachiocephalic, common carotid, or internal carotid artery should be repaired rather than ligated when technically possible. Subsequent ischemic or hemorrhagic cerebral infarction is unpredictable, but overall outcome is superior to that with ligation of the injured artery

    Destruction of Superconductivity by Impurities in the Attractive Hubbard Model

    We study the effect of U=0 impurities on the superconducting and thermodynamic properties of the attractive Hubbard model on a square lattice. Removal of the interaction on a critical fraction of fcrit0.30f_{\rm crit} \approx 0.30 of the sites results in the destruction of off-diagonal long range order in the ground state. This critical fraction is roughly independent of filling in the range 0.75<ρ<1.000.75 < \rho < 1.00, although our data suggest that fcritf_{\rm crit} might be somewhat larger below half-filling than at ρ=1\rho=1. We also find that the two peak structure in the specific heat is present at ff both below and above the value which destroys long range pairing order. It is expected that the high TT peak associated with local pair formation should be robust, but apparently local pairing fluctuations are sufficient to generate a low temperature peak

    Extensive error in the number of genes inferred from draft genome assemblies

    Current sequencing methods produce large amounts of data, but genome assemblies based on these data are often woefully incomplete. These incomplete and error-filled assemblies result in many annotation errors, especially in the number of genes present in a genome. In this paper we investigate the magnitude of the problem, both in terms of total gene number and the number of copies of genes in specific families. To do this, we compare multiple draft assemblies against higher-quality versions of the same genomes, using several new assemblies of the chicken genome based on both traditional and next-generation sequencing technologies, as well as published draft assemblies of chimpanzee. We find that upwards of 40% of all gene families are inferred to have the wrong number of genes in draft assemblies, and that these incorrect assemblies both add and subtract genes. Using simulated genome assemblies of Drosophila melanogaster, we find that the major cause of increased gene numbers in draft genomes is the fragmentation of genes onto multiple individual contigs. Finally, we demonstrate the usefulness of RNA-Seq in improving the gene annotation of draft assemblies, largely by connecting genes that have been fragmented in the assembly process

    Geographical Embedding of Scale-Free Networks

    A method for embedding graphs in Euclidean space is suggested. The method connects nodes to their geographically closest neighbors and economizes on the total physical length of links. The topological and geometrical properties of scale-free networks embedded by the suggested algorithm are studied both analytically and through simulations. Our findings indicate dramatic changes in the embedded networks, in comparison to their off-lattice counterparts, and call into question the applicability of off-lattice scale-free models to realistic, everyday-life networks
